DBS is a non-profit collaborative venture involving
Bundesarbeitskreis Netze in Schulen (BAK),
BioNet e.V.,
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Erziehungswissenschaft (DGfE),
Deutsches Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung (DIPF),
Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI),
Gesellschaft Information und Bildung (GIB),
GMD Forschungszentrum Informationstechnik GmbH (GMD),
Offenes Deutsches Schulnetz e.V. (ODS),
Schulen ans Netz e.V. (SAN)
and several German universities.
DBS was initiated by DFN-Verein, is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research
(BMBF)
and is being developed by
Prof. Diepold
of Humboldt-Universität, Berlin (HUB).
The Server Concept
DBS: A Central Entry Point
The Deutsche Bildungs-Server (DBS) is a central entry point
for communication and information in the field of education
within the rapidly developing German educational network.
The virtual world of
- personal computers of teachers, educational researchers and administrators,
- local networks (LAN) in schools,
- server of Laender (state) institutes,
- university networks,
- servers of educational publishing houses and other commercial media enterprises
including their resources - materials, ideas, information, projects -
is to be linked together. DBS aims to put educational information
into a transparent infrastructure, to use synergies and to make it accessible to
educators and the general public.
This is to be achieved in a twofold manner:
(1) Database of Materials
Several databases are being installed, including information on
- some 1.200 German educational institutions including universities and teacher training colleges, Laender institutes and ministries of education,
- German schools accessible via Internet,
- Internet school projects,
- German projects in the field of educational research,
- educational software,
- a Who's Who in German Education.
(2) Communication Platform
DBS provides a communication platform to teachers, educationalists, administrators, students, parents, journalists, and others with regard to educational
issues, theories and practical experiences and serves as an interface to the world of education in Europe and Overseas.
DBS is to enable everyone interested in education
to become informed as well as to provide information to others.
Access
Access to DBS is free to everybody. Parts of DBS will be reserved
to workgroups, in which case access will be assigned selectively.
Non-Profit
DBS is a non-profit venture, relying on voluntary contributions
concerning information, resources and personal expertise of men
and women dedicated to education in a global information society.
DBS is
- to serve the common wealth of net users,
- to respect personal copyrights,
- to educate users towards an ethical way of using information
and communicating with others,
- to serve the needs of not only schools but also of universities,
further training institutions, educational administrations, and the media,
- to link the German educational network to other countries,
- to respond quickly and flexibly as new developments and needs arise.
Development
DBS will be developed in the next three years (1996 to 1999) by the Department of
Computers in Education of Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany.
Support and Counseling
The delopment process will be monitored by a group of experts
from the supporting institutions named in the beginning of this page.
Institutionalization
At the end of the three-year funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Education, DBS
will be taken over by a non-profit corporation and financed by private
sponsoring.
